Looking for dairy free options when baking and cooking? Look no more! Here is what I use to replace common ingredients in my baking and cooking.
I am a total sucker for anything made by the So Delicious company (the company is actually called Turtle Mountain). And I know some of you can’t have coconut at all. So, I’ve included a few bits of everything here.
Buttermilk….replace with So Delicious Coconut Kefir
Yogurt….replace with coconut, soy or rice yogurt
Butter…replace with Earth Balance Buttery Sticks (or sometimes shortening)
Milk…replace with soy, coconut, almond, hemp, rice milk
Dried milk powder….replace with non-dairy dried milk powder
Chocolate chips….replace with Enjoy Life chocolate chips
Shredded cheese…replace with Daiya shredded cheese
Cream Cheese….replace with Tofutti cream cheese
Sour Cream…replace with Tofutti sour cream
Half and Half or Heavy Cream….replace with soy or coconut coffee creamer when baking

Jen,
Thanks for the suggestions.
We like to use palm oil for frosting instead of butter. It is similar to shortening but healthier, I think. There are a couple of brands available. Spectrum is one that pops into mind. You can get it at Whole Foods. It comes in a round plastic tub similar to Crisco oil. Coconut cream is another little known product that is handy to have. Darifree is a popular brand of dry milk powder that many like, but we don’t use it because it is not corn-free. Do you know if there is one that is also corn free?

Hi Caryn,
I use palm shortening too. It is really great for those that can’t have soy and is much healthier than that old Crisco (although I have to admit I still like Butter flavored Crisco – I know it is gross!)
I’ll have to check on the corn issue. I’m not sure. I’ll check and get back to you. Jen
Hi there,
Thanks for such an informative post. I did however notice you did not mention ice cream
My favorite non-dairy ice cream is Luna and Larry’s dark chocolate coconut bliss bars (actually I dont have to be dairy free and its still my fave ice cream). They also carry ice cream in small tubs as well. So delicious (i believe) is also supposed to be really good, I haven’t tried it yet though.

Hi Shell,
I did forget ice cream. Sorry!
My favorite ice creams that we enjoy at our house are So Delicious and Good Karma. I know my sister really enjoys the Coconut Bliss brand. Jen
