Gluten Free Finally Means Something in the US



approvedFor the first time ever, the FDA has announced what the term “gluten free” means in the United States.  A recent announcement stated that items testing at less than 20 ppm (parts per million) can be labeled as gluten free.

This is so exciting!  Now companies finally have something to base their gluten-free claims on.  I am thrilled that the US is catching up to Europe and other parts of the world with our GF labeling.

What does this mean for you?  I assume it will take a while for labels to be updated.  And I’m sure the FDA will continue to clarify the rulings and set time limits.  In the meantime, know that companies that do test their products for gluten and find that they contain less than 20 ppm are considered to be safe for consumption for our community by the US government.u
